I was supposed to be answering a message from my boyfriend.
That's it.
One quick reply, then back to work.
Instead, 47 minutes later, I found myself watching videos of womensphere vs. manosphere, saving reels of recipes I'll probably never try, and wondering where the afternoon had gone.
Again.
Maybe you've had your own version of this.
You sit down with every intention of working on your business. Maybe you're finally going to outline that program, update your website, send that email, or take the next step on the idea that's been living in your head for months.
But somehow, you end up scrolling Facebook, watching reels, playing games, or buying another course that promises to solve all your problems.
And the worst part?
It's not even fun anymore.
What starts as a quick dopamine hit often ends with frustration, guilt, and that familiar ache of knowing you're capable of so much more.
As AuDHD women, many of us have spent years wondering why we can't seem to consistently follow through on the things that matter most to us. We have incredible ideas. We see possibilities everywhere. We have gifts that could genuinely help people. Yet so often, it feels like we're standing on the sidelines of our own lives.
Like we're forever getting ready to begin instead of actually beginning.
If that feels painfully familiar, I want you to know something.
Nothing is wrong with you.
Your brain is navigating a world specifically designed to capture your attention while simultaneously dealing with executive dysfunction, dopamine-seeking tendencies, and the constant tug-of-war between craving novelty and needing structure.
It's a lot, but there is hope.
When you learn how to step out of the cheap dopamine cycle, something remarkable happens. The ideas that have been trapped inside your head start becoming real. You begin creating instead of consuming. Finishing instead of preparing. Building instead of dreaming.
And that feeling? It's better than any reel, game, or endless scroll could ever provide.
Let's talk about how to get there.
One of the sneakiest things about doomscrolling is that it often isn't what we intended to do in the first place.
Maybe you open Messenger to reply to a friend.
Maybe you're checking Facebook for an upcoming event.
Maybe you're posting something for your business.
And then...
A reel catches your eye.
A suggested post appears.
Someone shares a funny video.
Before you know it, the algorithm has successfully pulled you into a completely different activity than the one you originally planned.
That's because these platforms are incredibly good at what they do. They are literally designed to keep you engaged for as long as possible.
One simple way to fight back is to decide exactly why you're opening the app before you open it.
Ask yourself:
What specific task am I here to complete?
How long should this take?
What will tell me I'm done?
Then consider setting a timer for five minutes before you open the app.
The timer creates a gentle external reminder that helps interrupt the trance-like state scrolling can create. When the alarm goes off, you can check whether you're still doing the thing you intended to do.
Inside my mentoring work, we spend a lot of time creating systems that work with AuDHD brains instead of against them. Setting intentions sounds simple, but having the right structure around it often makes the difference between a strategy that sounds good and one that actually gets used consistently.
Sometimes the best solution is not relying on willpower at all.
If certain apps repeatedly pull you away from your goals, it may be time for the nuclear option - deleting them (at least temporarily).
Removing social media apps from your phone creates a small amount of friction between the urge and the action. That tiny pause is often enough to help your brain choose differently.
You can also use website blockers or app blockers during dedicated focus times.
Many AuDHD women spend years trying to become the kind of person who can simply resist temptation. But why go to all that trouble?
If you know something consistently derails you, it's okay to make it harder to access. In fact, that's often the smarter strategy.
Think about it this way: if you were trying to avoid snacking, you probably wouldn't leave your favorite snacks sitting open on your desk all day; you'd create an environment that supports your goals.
Your digital environment deserves the same consideration.
The people I work with often discover that removing distractions is far easier than constantly fighting them. We build systems that reduce decision fatigue and make productive choices feel easier and more natural.
Because success isn't about having more willpower. It's about creating conditions that help you succeed.
Many AuDHD women have spent their entire lives feeling like everyone else received an instruction manual they somehow missed.
We've been told to "just focus."
To "be more disciplined."
To "stop procrastinating."
To "try harder."
After hearing those messages for decades, it's easy to believe we should be able to do everything on our own.
But here's what I've learned after more than 45 years of not understanding my own AuDHD brain: We were never meant to do this alone.
Body doubling works because it gives our nervous systems something many of us have been missing for a long time: supportive presence without pressure.
There's comfort in knowing someone else is showing up, too.
There's relief in being surrounded by people who understand why starting can be hard, and staying with task long enough to finish can be even harder.
And there's something incredibly healing about discovering you're not the only brilliant woman who struggles with these issues.
This is why I created the Cozy Coworking Crew Discord community (and made it only $7 per month!).
Inside the community, members can easily body double, working alongside other women who understand the unique challenges of building a business with an AuDHD brain.
Rather than trying to force yourself through everything alone, you gain access to a supportive environment designed to help you stay focused and make progress.
You Might Be Wondering...
"What if the other person distracts me more than helps me?"
That's a completely valid concern.
Body doubling may not be helpful if the other person is constantly chatting, interrupting, judging, or pulling your attention away from your work.
That's exactly why we've structured the Cozy Coworking Crew to support different working styles.
We have dedicated focus channels where everyone is automatically muted so you can work without interruptions. We also have chatty channels for those moments when connection and conversation help you stay engaged.
This allows you to choose the level of interaction that works best for your brain and your task.
You get the benefits of working alongside others without the downsides that can sometimes come with in-person coworking environments.
Imagine where you could be six months from now if even a fraction of your scrolling time was redirected toward your dreams.
Not because you suddenly became more disciplined.
Not because you finally figured out how to "try harder."
But because you built supports that actually work for your brain.
Imagine:
Looking at a finished project and thinking, "I made that."
Launching the offer.
Publishing the content.
Starting the business.
Serving the clients.
Sharing the idea that's been sitting inside you waiting for its chance.
The truth is that the world doesn't need another perfectly curated social media feed.
It needs what you have.
It needs your perspective, your creativity, your lived experience, and the solutions only you can bring.
Every hour spent trapped in the cheap dopamine cycle is an hour your gifts remain hidden.
But every small step toward meaningful work is a vote for the life you actually want. You don't have to make that journey perfectly. You don't even have to make it consistently.
You just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
And sometimes, the first step is simply closing the app and opening the project instead.
Every time you choose meaningful progress over cheap dopamine, you're creating momentum. You're bringing your ideas into the world. You're proving to yourself that your dreams deserve your attention.
And with every completed project, you get to experience the powerful satisfaction that comes from seeing your brilliance become something real.
If you're tired of trying to outsmart your brain on your own, come check out the Cozy Coworking Crew Discord.
For just $7 per month, you'll get access to body doubling sessions, supportive community spaces, and encouragement from people who truly understand the unique challenges of being an AuDHD entrepreneur.
You don't have to do this alone.
Come join us and let's turn more of those brilliant ideas into finished projects!
